| Job-0185 - Unix Administrator/Oracle |
Unix ADMINISTRATOR
SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the IT Infrastructure Manager, provides personal computer hardware and software support; utilizes technical expertise to provide solutions to customer’s needs by providing appropriate workstation solutions, including hardware and software installation, service and support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / Common Tasks
: DAILY 1. Ensure all scheduled backup jobs ran successfully. (I check these) 2. Ensure all cron jobs ran successfully. (Most of the time I do but sometimes forget to look at the cron jobs daily, The Oracle crons are mostly Greek to me not knowing Oracle) 3. Take corrective action on all failed jobs. (Try an jump on any issues that pop up. Issues with oracle, Tomcat, Glovia, I cannot do much with at this time, Would love to know Oracle and Glovia much better! Currently reading Tomcat book and Tripwire manuals) 4. Track/Monitor system performance and activity (From time to time I look at em7 but mainly use Opennms daily. Both have roughly the same info but I also look at all internal servers and provide info as needed)
Review all log files for warning and error messages and resolve as required. 5. Syslog (Cron and syslog are centrally logged and go to em7 which is looking for ERROR and CRITICAL) I do go through these log files and also the messages file depending on the system looking for issues) 6. Specific web and database logs of UNIX based systems (Not sure about the database logs would love to learn Oracle/Glovia. Reading the Tomcat book so I be more helpful with the web based stuff. ) 7. Application logs. (Of the software I know about I am checking what I can. Been trying to put together a listing of the software running on each system and the log files but have made little progress. I ask but am told looking at running processes is not much help and that the log files do not offer much and that I need to do certain checks to verify functionality! I would absolutely love to know what these checks are but very few seem to have the time to assist ) 8. Report suspicious activity immediately (I report anything I see immediately. Always asking Ted or others around me when I detect anything) 9. Corrective actions (for now) require EIP team approval (I always ask before implementing! I make it a point to speak to Jeff or Les before changing or modifying anything)
Weekly
1. Download and Review packages for all application and OS (Done daily at least the Red Hat side. Almost pointless without a testing environment) 2. Implement as needed (Need a testing environment anything applied could have dire consequences without a testing environment) 3. Verify files sizes of logs, spawning and cleaning as necessary (I monitor the file systems and have escalated as needed, most of the log files I do not touch unless they are not rotating or are getting too big. I call Les or Jeff before touching to ensure doing so will not impact anything) 4. Review working daemons and applications to ensure health ( I have a ps -ef capture I check but this does not ensure much! An application could be in a zombie state but without testing procedures I am not able to detect this. See number 7 above) 5. vmstat, iostat, netstat to verify performance issues (I look at the performance of the systems daily hard drive, network, etc.)
Monthly
1. Review / Audit security against base line. Analyze alerts (Tripwire is in place and am looking at this daily. Reading the tripwire manual to get more up to speed) 2. Check for essential system, 3rd party software updates and patches (This really requires a testing environment to implement I can check for the updates/patches but at this point in time this is about it!) 3. Perform Routine disk maintenance on servers (I do what checks I can mainly checking log files most of this would be detrimental on a open file system) 4. Perform server clock/time synchronization (NTP does this but I do go at least weekly and verify the system time because NTP does not always work as I have seen in the past)
Almost all the tasks under monthly I do at least weekly with the exception of #2
Quarterly
1. Test tape/backup restore from tape (random file recovery) (Have not done this yet what system should we use?) 2. Restore backup files to a test environment to verify procedures and files (see section 2.5) (What test environment should we use?) 3. Review and update any custom code/scripts. Ensure documentation on WIKI and script is in SVN. (Just recently updated WIKI and SVN. Need to do better with this task!)
Annual (Not at this point yet) 1. Change Service Account passwords (see section 3.2) 2. Work with appropriate application admin to ensure all security changes for service accounts such as db and app accounts are implemented Physical mobility sufficient to be able to service PCs and other equipment installed under desks and in wiring closets.
